Love Language Week 1: Love Thyself?

We kicked off a new teaching series, Love Language: What God Says About Relationships. In Week 1, Pastor Scott Worthington shared from Matthew 22:34–40.

The most critical relationship in your life—other than your relationship with Jesus—is the one you have with yourself. This matters because if you’re not in a healthy relationship with yourself, it’s unlikely you’ll be in a healthy relationship with anyone else. And God’s primary way of expanding His kingdom is through relationships.

This weekend, we were honored to welcome back Pastor Jeff Phillips, our Congregation Pastor of Hope Church Henderson. He preached from Mark 15:33-41, the death of Jesus.

We reflected on what the death of Jesus reveals and the gifts His sacrifice gives us. Jesus died to pay the penalty of our sin so that we wouldn’t have to. He was forsaken so that we could be forgiven, punished so that we could be pardoned—and He took our righteousness and gave us His righteousness. Oh what a Savior!

The Gospel of Mark | Things Are Not Always What They Seem

We sat with the weight of Jesus’ suffering—every strike, every insult, every wound He took willingly. But we didn’t stop there. We also looked at His victory. Jesus endured it all so we could be free, and because of His triumph over sin and death, we now have salvation!

The Gospel of Mark | Jesus, Pilate, Barabbas, and You

In this sermon, Pastor Scott Worthington preaches from Mark 15:1–15, where Jesus is delivered to Pilate, Barabbas is released, and Jesus is handed over to be crucified.

 

Barabbas was a wicked, guilty, and condemned man—yet the crowd chose to set him free and crucify Jesus, the innocent and righteous one, in his place. As followers of Jesus, we must recognize that Barabbas is a reflection of us. We were the guilty ones, and Jesus, the righteous one, became our substitute. That’s the good news of the gospel. May we take the time to sit and reflect upon what Jesus has done for us.

At Hope Church, we believe that we don’t pray before we work, prayer is the work, and then God works. In Week 1 of Marked by Prayer, we learned that prayer is our part. This week, we explored several ways God works in response to our prayers.

• Why doesn’t God always respond quickly?
• Do I even need to pray if God already knows what I need?

The Gospel of Mark | Peter Denies Jesus

In this sermon, Pastor Scott Worthington preaches from Mark 14:66–72, where Peter denies Jesus.

The Jesus that Peter was experiencing was different than the Jesus that Peter wanted, and that led him to deny knowing Him. Unfortunately, we see this still happening today where many follow a version of Jesus they hope will bring success or fulfill their dreams, but when He doesn’t, they, like Peter, may say, “I don’t know that man.”

This weekend, we were honored to have Pastor Eric Shelner, our Congregation Pastor of Hope Church Boulder City, with us. He preached from Mark 14:53–65, where Jesus stands before the council.
