Acts | The Church God Uses

In this sermon, Pastor Tom McCormick preached from Acts 5:12–16.

In this passage, we see God moving powerfully through the early. Miracles were taking place, unity was evident, the church was highly respected by the culture, more people than ever were being saved, and many were being healed. Together, we reflect on whether God is moving with that same power in Hope Church today, and whether we truly desire to be a church like the early church.

Could it be that the reason we do not see more of God’s power is not because His power has changed, but because we cause Him to withhold it? And what would cause God not to withhold His power? That is the question we explore in this sermon.

Acts | Dangers in the Church

We wrestled with one of the hardest passages in the book of Acts as we looked at the story of Ananias and Sapphira. From this passage, we learned that the greatest hindrance to the advancement of the gospel is not sin outside the church, but sin inside the church.

As followers of Jesus, do we understand the seriousness of our sin? Do we have a holy fear of God, knowing that He is not only loving, but also holy? n this passage, we see how the early church lived in community. They lived generously by sharing their resources with one another, proclaimed the gospel to those who did not know Jesus, and met the needs of others. In the same way, we as a church are called to live generously in community.

In this sermon, Pastor Jordan preached from Acts 4:1–12, where Peter and John faced opposition for preaching the gospel.

As Jesus followers, we will face pressure and opposition as we share our faith, and while people will reject the gospel, the good news is that the gospel cannot be stopped. The gospel is still being shared today, God is still making Himself known, and He is still saving people, so we are not to shrink back but depend on the Lord as we continue sharing our faith.
